Mrs. Veale
Breitung Township School Success Worker |
The development of the School Success Program here at Breitung Township resulted from the collaborative efforts of educators, law enforcement, and community agencies in and around Dickinson County. Concerns about attendance issues and the realization that consistent school attendance was an indicator of future success for students in school as well as at home and in the community was the catalyst behind the implementation of this program.
The main goal of the School Success Program is to make positive changes in the lives of children and their families through building a partnership between the home and school. The program is geared toward students in kindergarten through grade 12 who have attendance issues and/or who are having difficulties at school / home that may impact their overall desire to attend school. Referrals to the program can come from many sources such as teachers, the school nurses, the school counselors/social workers, principals, outside agencies, law enforcement, and parents or students themselves. Upon receiving the initial referral, Mrs. Veale meets with the school staff working with the student and examines various aspects of the his/her participation in school. Parents are then contacted which allows Mrs. Veale to conduct an interview and schedule an in person visit to the home. In addition, with parent consent, the student is also interviewed, so Mrs. Veale is able to gather information from their personal perspective. Once specific problems are identified that are causing absenteeism, a plan to assist the child and family is developed which may involve many different strategies and may vary in duration. |
